As much as I love where I live, sometimes the best summer remedy is leaving home. This summer I have many opportunities to leave Rockland and explore. However, for this weekend’s getaway I chose something more familiar, my home away from home at a lake house on Wolf Lake located an hour’s drive from Rockland in Sullivan County, New York.

I took three friends up to my Grandfather’s house on Wolf Lake for two days of lakeside fun. We braved the steep gas prices and arrived at sunset on Friday. The sun reflecting off the water was worth the trip alone. This was one of the many beautiful moments I’ve experienced in my years going to the lake house. This house was built by my grandparents, my mother and her siblings in the seventies and has served as a summer house for my generation for almost nineteen years. It is the perfect summer getaway.

For those not as fortunate as I to have a relative living on the lake (or the many surrounding it in Sullivan County) the beaches, fishing and sailing pull travelers from all over the tri-state area. This scenic spot is worth the trip “upstate.” The beautiful lakes are full of freshwater bass (which grow to be quite large), the winds are perfect for even the most modest sailor to try their skills and the beaches are all lifeguard supervised with docks for jumping. All in all, Wolf Lake is a treasure not but two hours outside of New York City.

We recently drove around this area and it is beautiful. We think we passed a property on Canal Road at Wolf Lake that seemed to rent cottages or rooms? Perhaps it started with a B? It looked quite nice. Any ideas what it is called? Thanks very much

I asked around at the lake and there isn’t any Bed and Breakfast type places allowed (actually they are not permitted on Wolf Lake). It might have been on Yankee Lake, but no one I asked was sure.
